Unwanted Guest: A Case Study in Mental Health Storytelling for Nonprofits Who Want to Move People
The Film
Depression is hard to describe. People who live with it often say it is like a weight. A fog. A shadow that follows them.
We wanted to make that feeling visible.
Unwanted Guest is a short film about mental health and how it shows up in daily life. We took a different approach. Instead of showing depression as an emotion, we showed it as a physical presence. A companion that sits in the room. Silent but loud. Always there.
The film follows a single character through ordinary moments. Morning coffee. A walk. Sitting alone at a table. Through it all, a figure occupies the space with him. Sometimes close. Sometimes at a distance. Never leaving.
We wanted anyone who watches to recognize something. Either themselves or someone they love.
The Team
This film came together because of a small group of people who believed in the idea.
Mitch Cox handled the talent and voiceover, bringing a quiet authenticity to the performance.
Quinn Aden directed with a careful eye, making sure every frame served the emotion without overplaying it.
Gokan Akyaz shot the film. As a documentary filmmaker, he knows how to find the truth in a scene. The lighting is soft. The camera is patient. Nothing feels staged.
Rajinstan Kamalraj served as production assistant, keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes.
Ditte Folkman captured behind the scenes footage, showing the care that went into every moment.
It was a lean crew. The kind that works because everyone is there for the same reason. To tell a story that matters.
Why This Matters for Nonprofits
If you work at a mental health organization in Canada, you already know the challenge. You have the expertise. You have the programs. You have the people who need help. But reaching them is hard.
People scroll past statistics. They click away from brochures. They tune out when they feel like they are being lectured.
But a film? A film can stop someone.
When a person watches Unwanted Guest, they are not being told about depression. They are being shown what it feels like. That is the difference between awareness and understanding. And understanding is what moves people to act.
Why Invest in a Short Film
A short film like this is not cheap. But it is one of the most effective tools a nonprofit can invest in.
Here is why.
It creates empathy. A well made film puts someone inside an experience they have never had. That builds compassion. And compassion leads to donations, volunteers, and advocates.
It lasts. A social media post disappears in a day. A good film lives on your website, your YouTube channel, your fundraising presentations, and your grant applications for years.
It attracts attention. When you have a film that looks and feels professional, people take you seriously. Donors trust organizations that invest in quality storytelling.
It gives you content for months. From one film shoot, you can pull clips for social media, teasers for email campaigns, and stills for your annual report. One investment. Many outputs.
What Makes Unwanted Guest a Good Model
We approached this film the way we approach every project. With documentary instincts and a deep respect for the subject.
We did not rush. We spent time with the concept, making sure we were telling the story with dignity, not exploitation. We cast someone who could carry the emotion without overacting. We lit the scenes to feel natural, not cinematic in a way that pulls you out of the moment.
The result is a film that feels honest. You are not watching actors. You are watching something that could be your neighbour, your friend, yourself.
That is what nonprofits need. Not a polished commercial that feels like an ad. A film that feels like the truth.
How This Helps Nonprofits Reach Their Goals
If your mission is mental health awareness, a film like Unwanted Guest can:
-
- Raise funds. Share it during a campaign and let donors see exactly what they are supporting.
- Educate the public. Screen it at community events or share it with schools.
- Start conversations. Post it online and let people share their own stories in the comments.
- Support grant applications. Show funders that you invest in high quality, impactful work.
